It is good for students to know that the federal and state governments are willing to help. However, you are not guaranteed of receiving a grant. Even if you are in the worst financial situation, you are not eligible until you meet several requirements.
Apply for Government College Grants
The first step in applying for college grants is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. You don’t have to do anything else, as this will determine your eligibility.
Depending on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) you may qualify for a Federal Pell Grant or FSEOG Grant. Both of these grants are awarded based on income, nothing else.
Government School Grants and Deadlines
Every year, students miss out on government grants for college. Do you know why? Simply put, they don’t apply in time. You should plan far in advance and submit all the proper documentation as soon as possible.
The federal government, along with every state, receives thousands upon thousands of grant applications every year. They cannot make exceptions, so it is essential that you “play by their rules.” If you are even one day late you are not going to be considered for a grant that you may have otherwise received.
Government Student Grants – Get the Help of your School
In many cases, you do not have to deal directly with the government when applying for and accepting a grant. Instead, any awards will simply be included on your financial aid package. For example, the Federal Pell Grant may be listed and you did not even know that you were going to receive it.
Remember, as long as you file your FAFSA you will be considered for federal grants.
State grants, on the other hand, may require a separate application. This is something that a financial aid representative at your school can explain. They may be able to do all the work for you; they may require that you complete and send the appropriate application and information on your own.
You may not qualify for every program but any money received is better than none at all. If you take the time to search, you will find many government grants for college students.
