Was your parent or legal guardian a member of the United States Armed Forces? Did he/she die during service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan? Did this occur after September 11, 2011? If you answered yes to all three of these questions you may be eligible for the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant.
Iraq and Afghanistan Grant Eligibility Requirements
Even if you answered yes to the three questions above, you may not qualify for this college grant. There are additional eligibility requirements that you must meet:
- You must be ineligible for a Federal Pell Grant due to not having enough financial need.
- Under the age of 24.
- Enrolled in college courses at least part-time at the time of the death of your parent or guardian.
If you meet these three requirements, while also answering yes to those questions detailed in the first paragraph, you are eligible to receive the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant.
The amount of the grant is equal to the maximum Pell Grant for the year in which it is awarded.
Note: the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant cannot exceed the total cost of attendance.
